I wanted to explore how this simple and familiar melody could be transformed through jazz harmony while keeping its original joyful character. The arrangement combines swing rhythm, reharmonization, and voicings, with lyrical rubato sections that create contrast and allow the melody to breathe. My aim was to create a solo piano performance piece that is both enjoyable to play and musically rewarding, bringing a fresh harmonic perspective to a melody that has been loved for generations. Hope, you enjoy it, and thanks for watching! The arrangement combines the familiar melody with colorful reharmonization, gentle bass movement, and carefully shaped chord voicing, allowing the pianist to create a full and expressive sound with two hands. I have transposed the original key from D♭ major to G major, partly to make the arrangement more comfortable to play, but also because this key creates a particularly beautiful, singing tone on the piano. This tonal choice enhances the lyrical character of the melody and allows its expressive qualities to come through more naturally. The notation is designed to make the harmonic and accompaniment concepts clear, making this arrangement suitable for pianists who are beginning to explore jazz piano harmony and expressive solo playing. In this arrangement of Exactly Like You, inspired by Dave McKenna’s distinctive solo piano style, I focus on creating a strong, relaxed groove that gives the impression of a small jazz band played by one pianist. The texture shifts between four-beat guitar strumming and walking bass lines, while the melody and fills move freely above the groove. The notation is intended not only as a guide to the notes, but also to help the pianist understand and feel how the groove works within the arrangement. Sheet music (PDF) for this solo piano arrangement is available below. Dave McKenna was one of the greatest jazz pianists of the late 20th century, particularly renowned as a solo jazz pianist. He developed a unique style and incorporated into his playing what he himself described as “four-beat guitar strumming,” as well as a walking bass approach, creating the feeling of a small jazz trio while maintaining independent melodic and improvisational lines. Through this approach, he created a so-called “three-handed style” of piano playing. In this arrangement of the famous standard It Had to Be You, I have aimed to capture McKenna’s groove and approach, while bringing my own interpretation to this timeless melody. I hope you enjoy it.
